What is a CE mark?

CE marking is a legal requirement in the EU and involves a lot more than simply sticking a CE sticker onto a product.

• CE marking on a product is a manufacturer’s declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation, in practice by many of the so-called product directives
• CE marking on a product indicates to governmental officials that the product may be legally placed on the market in their country.
• CE marking on a product ensures the free movement of the product within the EFTA & European Union (EU) single market
• CE marking on a product permits the withdrawal of the non-conforming products by customs and enforcement/vigilance authorities.

Why should I be interested in the CE mark when buying the product?

In practice honest CE marking means that products should work well together with other appliances used in a house and not interfere with other radio systems and mainly be safe to use. In the EU, installers are obliged to use CE marked products for installations. Failure to comply could result in fines and/or imprisonment due to the safety consequences of using non-compliant equipment.

Simply speaking, an honest CE mark on a product, along with proper installation and usage assures your safety.

To check the real validity of CE marking is very difficult but the following checklist could be helpful:

• Is the price significantly lower when compared to other similar products ?
• Has the product been designed to conform to the relevant EU directives ?
• Has the product actually been tested for conformity ?
• Can the manufacture prove that the tests have been done ?
• Who did the testing ? The manufacture or a third-party test house ?
• When were the tests done ? What was the outcome?
• Does the manufacturer have a proper recognized quality system implemented in production to ensure that every one of this model of product complies ?
